After having spent its previous eighty years in at least five different roles, the Tudor Arms Hotel now has one of the most beautiful ballrooms in Cleveland. The newly renovated DoubleTree hotel, originally built in 1931 as the Cleveland Club, reopened in August, 2011 after years of ranging from an athletic club to a college dorm to an office building.
Maron, Ltd., the creative developer also responsible for revitalizing the hot entertainment district, East 4th St., in downtown Cleveland, transformed the unused and empty building, carefully restoring the building's character and grandeur.
The Crystal Room is but one of the hotel's two ballrooms. Its plaster and molding details, in order to conform to the historic tax credit requirements (the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places) had to be recreated, which was spearheaded by interior designer, Cindy Cohen, of C Rae Interiors.
The moldings throughout were painted a grey-bronze metallic paint, followed by an umber glaze. The distinct moldings were indeed brought back to life.
Ms. Cohen worked closely with Nicolette Capuano, of Beyond The Wall Mural Design ltd., who carried out the decorative painting. After months of planning, they decided to create four murals in the already elegant space, bringing in pops of color and warmth to the room.
The ballroom was a gem to work in and has already seen its share of weddings and special occasion dinners.
It is such a heartening thing to see a beautiful but neglected building brought back to life in such a caring way!
